		<description>So, when will the Italians be forced to return artwork looted from Athens by Sulla&#039;s armies in 87 B.C.?  And how about the holdings in the Vatican, no doubt the result of centuries of looting the treasures of other nations?  Is it at all relevant that the Italian state did not exist until the late 19th century?  What sort of claim does it have to works not produced on the Peninsula during the time of its existence as a sovereign?  I think much of this claim-staking by the Italian government is ridiculous.  If the 1970 UNESCO agreement doesn&#039;t provide a statute of limitations then what will?  If we have none then not only American museums, but also Italian museums will have to start signing give-back agreements.
