Mass MoCA should follow through on its obligations to the artist, either allow the artist the freedom and budget to complete the work. Or cancel and de-construct the exhibition unshown. An institution that invites an artist for a project, should not be making judgments of the artist's working methods.

Buchel is not an outsider or unknown. His methods and installations are well documented, no doubt the Curator and organizers of the exhibit knew this. Other types of research would reveal what it would be like to work with Buchel, and that was likely known by the institution as well.

This is a real loss for Mass MoCA, but an even bigger loss for artists. It sets up a precedent that an institutions desires out weigh the work of those they sponsor. This is censorship, it is the suppression of the right to express or communicate idea by an institution who's duty is to provide a venue for the communicate.

Disgusting

Re:

"Joseph Thompson, the MASS MoCA director, says he finally called it quits when Buchel went back to Europe last December and left behind a list of new elements he needed for the installation, including the fuselage of a large jet liner ..."

I don't think Mass Moca should show the work until it is complete. However, I have to question huge budget artwork. Is it totally neccessary? $300,000 could support around 100 artists for a whole year. I create art on a $26000 yearly income. It drives me crazy. Bigger isn't always better.
